HOCKEY.

LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, September 5. The New Zealand ladies’ hockey tournament’s third day’s play was continued, with a bleak southerly wind blowing and frequent rain showers in the morning. The weather had moderated considerably by the time the tournament commenced, and bright sunshine and splendid grounds put heart into tho players. As good exhibitions of hockey, the games fell far short of the second day. The only Same in which any fine hockey was isplayed was in the Hawke’s BayManawatu B. fixture. Although Hawke’s Bay won by a large margin of points, Manawatu played a good combined game. Tho defeat of Auckland by Buffer was a surprise; also Wellington’s win over the West Coast, but the lastnamed team has entered a protest against the referee for not allowing a goal which in his opinion was shot 'between the posts from outside the circle. Hawke’s Bay defeated Manawatu B by 6 to 2. It was an excellent contest. and credit is due to the Manawatu team (composed of mere girls) for their display against the champions. From the commencement they rushed play twice in succession to Hawko’s Bay’s territory, and once missed an easy chance to score. Eventually the latter took charge and Miss Pitt* scored by turning a pass from Miss Crowley into the net. Manawatu again attacked with vigour, but, being too slew in the circle, lost any chance they might have had of scoring a goal. A long spell of even play followed. Hawke’s Bay then were busy defending, and some good play by Manawatu was seen. Close on half time Hawke’s Bay scored , a second goal through Miss Crowley’s agency, and two minutes later Miss I. 'Bailey scored Manawatu’s goal by a brilliant piece of individual play. In tho second half each team attacked in turn. The Hawko’s Bay forwards were too experienced for the younger team, but they only scored four goals in this spell by .strenuous battling. Miss Pitt made next score by running througn and hitting beautifully.' ' Manawatu retaliaated from the bully-off, and shot between tho posts, but the goal was disallowed for off-side play. Miss Crowley registered tho next goal from a. gliding pass from the left winger into the net, and also secured a fifth goal from a penalty bullvj given for Mapawatu’s custodian falling on and hiding the ball. Tho final goal came from tho stick of Miss Crowley, the centre forward. Mr. B. Kean refereed.

Wellington B. beat West Coast by 2 goals to 1. There was not much to pick between the teams, play for the major portion of the game 'being up and down the field, each team in turn having to defend its goals. West Coast forwards were an improvement on the second day, but played too far forward at times. In the first half Miss Barnett, for Wellington, scored the only goal of that spell, and in the second spell Miss Benge scored the winners’ second goal, while Miss Lindsay registered the West Coast’s solitary score from a penalty bully. Mr. C. Search refereed.

Bnller beat Auckland by 6 goals to 2, after a poor game. The winners on their play certainly did not merit such a hollow victory. Bnller’s play was unscientific. and Auckland lost many opportunities through the forwards hitting too lightly in the circle. In the latter half of the second spell Auckland should have been awarded two penalty bullies for players keeping the ball hidden under their skirts. The scorers for the winners were Misses M. Mackay (2), D. Greenland (2), A. Hale, and E. Yitaglich; and for Auckland, Misses Kenny and Wylie. Mr. 11. Tinncy refereed. After a keen hut uninteresting struggle, Manawatu A heat Wanganui by 2to nil. Miss Collins scored a goal in the first spell, and Miss Kerslake in the second spell. Both teams showed combination. Mr. F. Ryan refereed. Canterbury A heat Marlborough by 3 to nil. Play was decidedly poor, and there was ho combination on cither side. Canterbury scored the only goal in the first half. Mr. A. W. Bennett was referee. Nelson B defeated Canterbury B by 3to nil. It was a. fairly fast and even game. The winners were superior in combined rushes, in which way all their scores wore obtained. The scorers wore Misses Harris, Garrick, and Simpson. / Southland heat Wairavapa by 3 to 1, after a keen contest. The scorers for the winners were Misses Soarell (2) and Marsh, and for Waiarnpa Miss Gallon. Following are the teams to meet at Inglewood on Thursday:— Southern Division—Forwards, Sage, Sargent, Hutton, Froyer; halves, Dougal, Thomson, Bassett; full-backs, Curtis, Anderson; goal, Evens. Emergencies, Cameron, Hurrell, Kemp. Northern Division.—Forwards, Sutherland, Priest, Spurdlo. Harris; halves, Allen, Harris, Wei ham; fullbacks, Reid, Avery; goal-keeper, Stevens.
