NEW SOUTH WALES POLITICS.
The New South Wales Minister for Public Works (Mr Griffith), in a recent speech, said: “'Tilings have reached an impasse in Parliament. No party measure can ho carried into law. The understanding arrived at with the gentleman who has undertaken to occupy the Speaker’s chair will permit of the submission to Parliament and the consideration of proposals for necessary public works, which are not, in his opinion, party matters, hut arc regarded by both .sides in their true light—as national questions. . . . Undoubtedly when Parliament lias readied a deadlock, such as the present one, the proper course is to appeal to the electors to permit them to unravel the tangle. This course would have been recommended to the Gov-
ernor by his Ministers immediately Hie result of the by-elections was known, except for the fact that an election at this time was practically impossible in view of the fact that the electoral boundaries are out of date, and a new distribution of scats is in the course of preparation. Also, the rolls have hceii permitted to become so out of date that 'nearly 20 per cent of the electors would he disfranchised if an election were hold before steps were taken to revise the rolls. These conditions existing, everyone is agreed that, a short, nonparty session, embracing the passage of the Redistribution of Seats Bill, is the only sensible course to adopt. Fortunately, the broad-minded action of Mr Henry Willis in accepting the Speakership, on the' conditions I have mentioned, had made -such a course possible. The Government, was quite determined that as soon as' the electors were in a position to record their votes—that is, as soon as the electoral machinery can he got into proper working order—an appeal will'be made to the people.
