BUTTER AND CHEESE.
HIGH PRICES IN LONDON. The New Zealand butter season is about to open, and dairy farmers are in good heart at the strength of ! the English market at the moment. This may bo gauged by a' comparison of prices at per , cwt. to-day and two years ago:— 1911 1910 1909 Australian ... 123 s 11.3 a i Danish ... ... 143 s 117 s, 118 s Now Zealand cheese, too, shows a marked advance at this time ,of year compared with prices per cwt. two years ago:— 1911 1910 1909 New Zealand ... 60s 57s Cd 60s Writing on this subject the Waikato “Times” remarks:—The present high .prices have made dairy farmers aim directors of factories chary of selling their season’s outputs to buyers for the United Kingdom, and also of making contracts for supplying the local markets. The highest price offered for blitter (cheese is not being quoted, at present) is Ilfd per lb. for the whole season. The factories are generally holding out for ,11 ,\d per lb. free on board at Wellington. So far as local consumers are concerned it would seem that they will have to come into lino with the United Kingdom consumer. If- he has to pay a long price for his New Zealand butter, they, too, will have to pay accordingly. Even when the season is opened or butter is already being made to a small extent, it is not yet. clear that the mean level of Is Id to Is 2d per lb. for.,.ilia first-class brands will be reached. Whether steps will lie- taken towards the close of the coming season to retain sufficient butter in 'the Dominion for the Dominion’s needs .until the 1912-13 season opens remains to be seen.
