CHOLERA.

PANIC-STRICKEN POPULATION. Rome, September 1. The authorities have hitherto suppressed tho facts of tlic cholera ravages. Tho riot at Verbicaro revealed that a hundred corpses lay unburied for many days. Three-quarters of tho population of Leghorn have fled. The assistance of the Government is being sought to relieve the distress of the remainder. Eight hundred towns and villages in southern and central parts of Northern Italy are infected with cholera. The superstitious peasantry are threatening the sanitary officials with death, believing that tho Government is poisoning the water for the purpose of decimating the poor.
