.Sir. Strange was present at the interview between \on \ citiieim and Woolf Joel, w Irieii ended in the latc.i being shot, ami he was one of the principal witnesses at the trial. Counsel for tho prisoner set up the defouco that Air. Strange drew a pistol from a. drawer and Jired at Von Veltheim, wounding him sliwntly in the mouth, and that Von \ oitlieim then snot Air. \V. Joel and missed Air. Strange. Although tho hitter's evidence was to the contrary, the jury accepted die theory of tho defence, and acquitted Von \ dtheim, who was afterwards arrested on a charge of I Jack mad and expelled from the Transvaal. ilis subsequent arrest- ami sentence for threats to Solly Joel are matters ol common knowledge, and at the. present moment Vout Veltiieim is in prise i i. Air. Strange was a passive member of the Reform Committee in IMtW-Uti, and, along witn others, was sentenced to pay a lino of £2UUU, and undergo two years' iniprisonniont, but alter two months’ detention the majority of the Reformers wara released.
