ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETIES

A deputation from the Acclimatisation Societies’ Conference waited upon the Minister of Marine (the Hon. •J. A. Millar), and placed before him the resolutions carried which had reference to his Depaitment. The Minister said ho would go into tiro remits and let the Association know his views later on. Ho would like to give delegates a hint in the meantime. The Government was importing ova for the stocking of our rivers ,and the societies were getting the whole of the license foes. He thought the time had arrived when the sooioties should pay some portion

of the importation expenses. Some of the societies were obtaining a largo amount of revenue from fees, and ho thought the more wealthy organisations should help by either paying something towards the expense being incurred by tho Government, or by giving free ova to the smaller societies.

Subsequently tho deputation waited upon tho Hon. I). Buddo (Minister of Internal Affairs), and placed before him tho remits affecting his Department.

in his reply, the Minister said he did not see any reason why rangers appointed by one society should not be given a legal standing in the surrounding districts; it could be clone without legislation, and had already been carried out in regard to Southland and Otago. It was a most desirable thing that a ranger should have authority in tho neighbouring districts as well as in his own. He did not think it would be wise to impose a i special fee for native game shooting . It would be a hardship on people who could only get one or two days’ shooting a year. Ho did not agree that it would be proper to alter the law so that each Acclimatisation Society should be empowered to isne its own deer and game licenses.
