TARANAKI (12) v. MANAWATU (3) (Per Press Association.) Palmerston N., August 23. Taranaki defeated Manawatu-Horo-whenua by 12 points to 3 to-day. The game was not anything like as onesided as the scores would indicate; in fact, but for extremely bad luck the local men should have scored repeatedly, and were attacking for a great part of the time, while two Taranaki kicks struck tlie bar and bounced back. The visitors had the advantage of he sun and wind in the first spell, and Roberts scored early. Then there was no further score till the lastfew minutes of the first spell, when Taylor and Roberts scored tries in rapid succession. Previous to this there had been narrow escapes of Manawatu-Horowhenua scores. In the second spell, with the advantage of the wind, Manawatu were attacking a great deal of the time. In one exciting moment Henry Rawhiri was knocked out by striking McLeod at the corner flag. Winiata soon afterwards got over, but the ball had been dead. Others wore stopped on or near the line. Finally; Walter: Winiata scored, but no goal resulted. Then Young scored for Taranaki, and the game ended- with Taranaki attacking and loading by 12 points to 3. For Taranaki, Mynott played brilliantly. The others were good all round. For the losers, 51. Carroll was the best forward on the ground, and Martin Winiata- at five-eighths was very good. 51r E. IvfcKenaie, of Carterton, refereed.

SOUTHLAND v. WANGANUI. • Invercargill, August 23. The interprovincial match Wanganui v. Southland was played to-day in bad weather, with cold rain and wind, and the backs were thereby hampered. The wind was in favour of Wanganui in the first half, but the Southland forwards made .10 most of their opportunities, while the backs ably assisted. McNeece scored the only try during the game, and Martin converted. Wanganui in the second half was very near to scoring several times, but wore successfully warded off, and Southland eventually won by 5 points to nil.
