At the Supreme Court William Allen, for the theft of £2B from the Westport Coal Co., was sentenced tr six months. AN AVIATOR SHOT.

It was Prierro, secretary to the Bloriot Aviation sciiool at Hendon, act Prior, who was shot by Havana, a pupil who was dissatisfied with the progress he was making, and wished his fees returned. Prierro has succumbed to his injuries, and Havana’s wound also proved fatal.

MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT. u(Per Press Associaton ) Christcliurch, August 21. A motor car, with a driver and four passengers, was overturned on Sumner Road yesterday, and the passengers had a miraculous escape. The chauffeu. was pinned under the car, but fortunately it swung hack and released him. The others were thrown clear, and all are suffering from shock, but their injuries aie not serious.

FIRE AT HAWERA.

('Per Press Association.) Hawera, August 21

A fire in the Egmont Hotel this morning caused damage to the extent of about £3OO. The flames were quickly subdued by the brigade who were favoured with a good water pressure. The damage is covered in the Phoenix and Sun offices.

OPIUM SMOKING. A EUROPEAN FINED. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, August 21. At the Police Court this morning Percy George Gardiner was fined £2 and costs on a charge of smoking opium. The police found accused in the act yesterday in a Chinaman’s house in North-East Valley. Accused who is a young married man with two children, admitted that he had been addicted to the habit for ten years.
