REGARDING OPUNAKE RAILWAY. IS IT A.SOUTH TARANAKI MONOPOLY? The Stratford Boi’ough Council mot on August 14th and the Stratford County Council on August Kith. Both bodies passed resolutions protesting against the fact that in the preamble to the petition to he presented to Parliament Stratford is omitted, making it appear that only the electorates of Patea and Egmont are interested in the building of the railway. In a recent issue the Hawera “Star” reprinted our report, of the proceedings at the County Council; but in its issue of Saturday, the paper publishes the following from its Nonnanby correspondent :
At a meeting of delegates held at Kapnni in July it was unanimously ] decided to circulate petitions throughout South Taranaki, and the task of preparing and distributing those fell to the lot of toe Normauby Town Board, who wore the originators of the meeting. The petitions have been sent out, and practically every local ber’y and dairy company have received copies, and, in addition, a number are in private hands. Ratepayers of South Taranaki who arc alive to their own interests should make a point of signing this petition, wlpclx, although strongly urginig the Government to authorise the construction of this railway, does not, like so many previous petitions, stipulate a paxticular route. The chairman of the Nonnanby Town Board (Mr Davies) has received word that the petition is being largely signed in the various districts, and it is Imped that when the lists are all in the petition will he of such magnitude as to convince the powers that he of the absolute necessity of this important railway.
it is the intention of the Normanby Town Board to call in all the different lists on September 1, when they will be put in order, and forwarded to the member for Patea, Mr'G. V. Pearce, who, in conjunction with Messrs Dive and Hino, have been asked to present the petition.
The Town Board, who have up to the present, borne all the expense in connection with this movement, certainly deserve credit for their action, and it now rests with the ratepayers to do their share of signing the petition, and thus show their appreciation of the Board’s action.
