THE LATE CARDINAL MORAN.
THE FUNERAL. Sydney, August 20. The preliminary obsequies for tho late Cardinal Moran’s funeral took place yesterday, including a pontificial requiem high mass. It was very largely attended, the mourners including several members of the Ministry, tho Lord Mayor and Mr Redmond, tho Irish delegate.
Several prelates of the Roman Catholic Church participated in the service, which was of a most solemn and impressive character. In the course of a eulogy of Cardinal Moran, Archbishop Kelly said, “Who does not feel his loss? In loving Irehind, his Motherland, and Australia, his adopted country, ho loved every individual citizen at Homo and here. If possible, he had a more tender sentiment in regard to the interest, of those outside his fold than those within.” As a successor to Archbishop Vaughan and Cardinal Moran, continued Archbishop Kelly, he would try to obliterate the impression conveyed by certain publications that the late Cardinal Moran dealt harshly with Archbishop Vaughan’s relations in regard to tho hitter’s interment. Cardinal Moran had informed him that he paid the full bill for Archbishop Vaughan’s funeral expenses, and advised him to lot the matter rest till the day of judgment. It is estimated that nearly a quarter of a million of people viewed tho late Cardinal Moran’s funeral procession. The hears© containing tho remains, on leaving St. Mary’s Cathedral, proceeded via Liverpool, Elizabeth and College streets, and thence returned to the Cathedral, followed by church dignitaries, clergy, members of Catholic societies and guilds in regalia (including a representative of tho Now Zealand Hibernian Society), children of the Cathoolic schools, the Irish Rifle Regiment, representatives of tho Governor-General and the Governor, Mr Hughes (representing the Commonwealth Ministry), several members of tho State Ministry and official heads, and many public men were present at tho obsequies as a token of respect to the departed Cardinal. An immense crowd thronged the Cathedral.
Archbishop Kelly' performed the last rites as the coffin was placed in the vault. The service was simple, most solemn, and impressive. The choir rendered subdued dirges, and the Cathedral bolls were tolled.
(Received 21, 9 a.m.) Sydney, August 21. Archbishop Kelly has officially stated that there was no violence about the death of the Cardinal. He rose, and was preparing to dress, when weakness overcame him, and liq sank beside the bed, and without pain or a struggle ins sold departed. (Received 21, 10.50 a.m.) Sydney, August 21. The morning papers estimate that 200,000 people watched the funeral procession. GREAT BLANKET QUJTTAMGE SALE.
