The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. FRIDAY, AUGUST 18, 1911. THE CHRISTCHURCH BYELECTION.
That the Rev. L. M. Isitt should have been selected to represent Christchurch North in Parliament for the few remaining weeks before the General Elections, is only what most people expected. Politically his election cannot be taken as indicating anything, for several causes combined to ensure his return. A man of very considerable personality and a clever platform speaker, Mr Isitt was also tho personal friend of the late Mr T. E. Taylor, and undoubtedly obtained large support on sentimental grounds. Mr Isitt is also—now that Mr Taylor has departed—probably the foremost advocate of prohibition in New Zealand, and his attitude on this question is quite as uncompromising as was Mr Taylor’s.* The Rev. Mr Isitt’s attitude in the House will be watched with considerable interest, particularly by the electors of Christchurch North, who will shortly have to decide whether or not they will retain him as their member. Tho probabilities are, we should say, that Mr Isitt will find no difficulty in retaining tho scat.
