o SUBSTANTIAL WIN FOR MR ISITT. (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, August 17. The by-election for Christchurch North took 1 place to-day fin (inti weather. The polling was fairly heavy, 6920 out of 10,100 on the roll recording their votes, as compared with 7894 (T. E. Taylor 4338, C. M. Gray 2700, R. J. Ecroyd 856) at last election. The corrected final result is;— J. 1). Hall (Independent Opposition) ... . ... 3106 L. M. Isitt (Independent Liberal) ... ... 3811 Majority, for Isitt ... 70S The results were got in very promptly, the last coming to hand shortly after eight o’clock.
CANDIDATES’ SPEECHES. Christchurch, August 17. Mr J, ]). Hall, in a speech, stated that the manner in which those who helped him had done their work led him to believe the figures would he altered in two months’ time, when, as far as ho was concerned, he would give them an opportunity of deciding whether or not. -that would bo the case. y The Hot. L. M. Tsitt said he regarded the victory as a tribute to their dead leader. it was no secret that the Conservative forces had been concentrated upon the struggle, and the Conservatives took it that if they won the election, it would be an evidence of the turn of the tide of public opinion. They had failed, and he honestly believed that the day bad passed for legislation of the spirit and character the Conservatives believed was for the good of the Dominion.
