A NEW GROUND. (Par Press Association.) Wellington, August 16. Tho Wellington Football Association has decided to purchase a new ground at Kilbirnie for £9OO. A company is to be formed to control the ground, and steps are to bo taken to work up a movement to secure 3200 shareholders. WELLINGTON v. MAORIS. Wellington, August 16. _ Tho match Wellington v. Maoris was played here to-day in line weather There was a moderate attendance. The wind was in favour of tho Maoris in tho first spell, when they made a fair showing, but were ou tlie defence most of the second half. For Wellington, Cooke, Tilyard, Daly, Hills, Sullivan, and Cotneran scored, Mitchinaon converting four tries. For the Maoris Grace scored, Rawhiri converting. The game ended—Wellington 26, Maoris a. Cooke’s try was a brilliant effort. Ho secured the ball in his own 25, and heat tho whole of the opposition in the face of a strong head wind. REFEREES GO ON STRIKE. Auckland, August 16. The Auckland Rugby Referees’ Association went on strike this evening. Tho Referees’ Association asked last week for a free hand in the appointments for club matches and for a consultation when - appointments were being made for rep. matches. The Auckland Union decided that tho by-laws prevented the first request but agreed to the latter. The actual cause of tiio strike is said to have arisen from a remark made by the secretary of tho Auckland Rugby Union to the president of the Referees’ Association regarding past appointments for rep. matches, and a withdrawal of this was demanded and refused Hence the strike.
