DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS.
A HUSBAND’S GENEROSITY. tPcr Press Association. ) Auckland, August. 14. A petition for divorce, lodged by Thomas Cargill, chief engineer on the Paloona, against Mary Jane Cargill, with Michael McCiair named as corespondent, adultery being the allegation, was heard at the Supremo Court this afternoon. The parties were married in 1893 at Fitzrcy, Melbourne, and lived happily together for some years till in 1899 Mrs Cargill, who had gradually been succumbing to drink for some time, completely gave way and associated with immoral people. Several efforts wore made to reclaim the woman, but to no purpose. In 1900 the petitioner left his wife, but paid her an allowance of £2 a week from”‘that. year, up to "November last, when he reduced the amount to £1 a week because of what he had heard, and had continued to pay the latter sum up to the present time. Evidence was given that respondent and co-re-spondent had lived together in a cottage as a married couple. “This petitioner has behaved with extraordinary generosity towards his ivife,” remarkßd His Honour in granting a decree nisi to be made absolute in three months.
