JEW REFUSED ARMY COMMISSION.
The Ended States War Department has reprimanded Colonel Joseph Garrard, commandant at Fort -Meyer, a suburb of New York, for refusing to endorse the examination papers of Mr Joseph Bloom, a Jewish candidate for a commission in the army. When the matter came to the knowledge of the President he immediately wrote a strong letter to Nlr Stimsou, the new Secretary of War, ordering him to reprimand Colonel Garrard.
hi his letter the President said that the army officer should bo censured for “his unfounded and nariow race prejudice.” hi his defence Colonel Garrard said that be had turned baelc the young Jew on the ground that the presence of Jews at so important a military post as Fort Moyer would, in his opinion, be subversive of discipline. There is some ground for the action taken by Colonel Garrard (says the “Daily Chronicle’s” New York ■■correspondent), because several young officers of wealthy 1 amides who have, been attached to the staff at Fort Meyer have conducted themselves with an ostentatious display of money which has militated against the discipline of the post, which is so near the capital that the officers spend most of their leave here. The young Jew belongs to a rich merchant family, and Colonel Garrard’s supporters declare that ho had the young man’s money in mind when ho refused to endorse his papers. The President, however, has taken a broader view of the matter, and denounces the idea that Jews would bo subversive to discipline. Ho has ordered that a special examination be accorded the candidate, and his papers ‘signed if ho passes it.
