Wellington, August 13. Tho North island Country Team mot and vanquished the South Island Country Team yesterday. Tho game was not a spectacular ona, and resolved itself into a series of scrambles, with ono or two occasional flashes. The northerners prevailed to the extent of 18 to G, although the difference in the scores did not indicate tho relative merits of the teams. O’Connor (2) and Darby scored for the visitors, McKenzie, converting two tries, and kicking a penalty. For the losers O’Brien kicked ; two penalty goals. i MAORIS BEAT WANGANUI. Wanganui, August 13. The Maori touring team mot and defeated Wanganui on Saturday by 8 to nil. The weather was perfect, and the ground hard, Anil fast, all in favour of a good game. The attendance was .very, large. Soon after the kick-olf a native rush ended successfully, Wmiata badly boating the local full-back And scoring under the posts. Rogers hmissed an easy- 1 kick. Play was very- even for the rest of the game, until, with three minutes to go, Kaipara, with one of his corkscrew runs, beat practically all tne Wanganui’ and then passed to libbers, who scored near tne posts. THURSDAY’S MATCH
The play-off on Thursday .between the winning teams in the northern and southern divisions is exciting a great deal of interest. The Rugby Onion is making an endeavour to get excursion fares on the railway, and to have the train stopped at Flint Road. The general opinion is that the teams are evenly matched, and that a hardfought game should result.
