MILITARY TRAINING.

SCENE IN WELLINGTON. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, August 7. For three hours last night about ;eventy youths took charge of Cuba tud Dixon Streets in a demonstration igainst the Socialists in their attempt ;o belittle the universal . training icheme. The demonstration was the •eault of an open-air meeting held by :ho Socialists on the street corner.

There was a large congregation of the public listening quietly to the theories enunciated. One speaker upheld the action of young Cornish, who was imprisoned, in not registering, and stated that no cause was ever won without some individual breaking the law and becoming a martyr. In support of ins contention, he quoted history, going hack to Charles I. Hero someone interjected: “He had Ins head cut off!” “The time will come when King George’s head will be cut off, also,” ietnrted the speaker. With this statement the meeting

ended. The crowd became furious. The S( ciahsts’ platform was rushed and rod v-tod to splinters, and the Socialists retreated to their hall, followed by a huge crowd. With tho aid of the police the hostile element was kept out of the hall, but a crowd of youths and boys mado a demonstration outside the hall, and sang patriotic songs for some time.

Tho police eventually effected the dispersion of the lads, who promised more next Sunday.

OFFICERS’ CAMP,

Palmerston N., August 7

An officers’ training camp for Wellington district has been opened on the show grounds, where 400 officers and non-coms, arc under canvas, Colonial Chaytor being in charge. The camp is on the lines of the Tauherenikau camp. Among tho officers are two colonels, two lieut.colonels, thirty-one captains, sixtynine subalterns, seventy-one sergeants, and 42 corporals.

Tiro Governor and General Godley will visit camp during tho week.
