In response to Lord Alovley s circular seventy-six Liberal peers lurm pledged themselves, nine w.ll iollow Lord Halsbury, and eight Unionists are willing, if necessary, t) vi to for the Government to prevent the, necessity of creating peers.
A meeting of “Stawards ’ at Tiolborn and Chelsea passed resolutions supporting Lord Halsbury. Tho latter, speaking at •-helsea, said he did not believ tho people of England demanded the ovcrchrow ‘of their ancient Constitution. To cio Mr Redmond justice, ho made no secret of his object, and boldly told the Government that unless they did what lo wanted ho would turn them out. Lord Selborno denounced Mr Asquith for advising the King to create peers and set up a despotism, in order to pay Air Redmond’s price. History could not show a more infamous conspiracy. Let tho Radicals create their peers, and thus bring home to the country the revolutionary nature of the procedure. Mr Wyndham declared that when Mr Asquith talked of creating 500 peers the Unionist party’s answer should be like Lord Clive’s to tho cheating bully, “Shoot and be damned!”
Mr H. Chaplin severely criticised the ‘ ‘Chainberlain-Halsburyites. ’ ’
Tho Government has decided to postpone consideration of the Insurance Bill till tho autumn session. Tho Manchester Unity of Oddfellows is urging that it postponed until 1912, to give them time to consider such a complicated Bill. Tho Government’s concessions to medical men has increased the friendly societies’ opposilion, PAYMENT OF MEMBERS. Loudon, August 5. Mr Lloyd-Georgo moves in tho House of Commons on Thursday iu favour of the payment of members at the rate of £4OO per year, members receiving official salaries.
