As long as society is constituted as it is, all kinds of people will continue to strive for money by ail kinds ol means. In evidence of tin's it is reported from New York that developwhich have arisen in the big aristocratic smuggling case point to at least a dozen wealthy individuals, as well-known, it is stated, in London as in New York, being involved. It is stated that a banker who is sue pected of having smuggled £-100,001 worth of goods is really the head ol an informal organisation of rich oOciety people which has boon systematically and constantly smuggling through the Now York Customs, Paris gowns, laces, .and jewels for personal use. Twenty pounds was the pric? paid to Customs inspectors to pass each trunk without examination. The mugglers have apparently been reiving upon their social promnn.nco :u! political influence to prevent disclosures. It is stated that Mr Loci), collector of the port of Now York, declares that ho intends to push thematter to a finish, and to oncleavcu; to obtain sentences of imprisonment if lie can obtain the needful evidence. One unexpected possibility in the intricato details of the case is that the woman who, through desire or revenge, gave the Government the lirsl information may he compelled hersell to stand trial for smuggling jewels gi"en her by her admirers.
