INDUSTRIAL UNREST.
London, August 4
Some of the vessels which wore unable to load in London were ordered to Antwerp. Tire foreign unions have been instructed to boycott them. There are twenty thousand strikers on the Thames, including six hundred lightermen.
The Chamber of Commerce has arranged a conference whereat masters and men have agreed to Sir A. K. Rollit to act as arbitrator to decide whether tho dockers’ work is stevedores’ work, and, cotrsequendy, whether they are entitled to oighlponco rates.
Nineteen trades connected with Clyde shipbuilding and engineering industries arc demanding a shilling weekly advance for piecework. (Received 5, 8.5 a.m.) London, August 4.
A large force of striking dockers at Belfast attacked carts conveying goods from the quays. The vehicles were overturned and tire goods scattered.
An agreement has been signed ending tiro Liverpool strike. The agreement concedes r ecognition of the Dockers’ Union and Union hours of pay. (Received 5, 10.10 a.m.) Sydney, August 5.
A conference of tlio Waterside Workers,’ Federated Seamen’s and Federated Carters’ and Drivers’ Unions has been called at- Brisbane for Wednesday to discuss matters in connection with the sugar strike. The conference is likely to have an important effect on the position. Fears are expressed in some quarters that the result may be the precursor of a general strike of transport workers.
