ENFORCING CLEANLINESS.
A BATH, OR PRISON. The health officer of Aurora, Illinois,'has taken a drastic step to compel cleanliness in the town. With the consent of tlie police, he issued an oi> •dor to tho residents, tiiat they must take at least one hath per week, or be locked up'. The experiment has been in operation for some time, and already tlie health of tiie place has much improved, and tho police have not found it necessary to make an arrest because of defiance of tho order. Tho majority of the inhabitants arc .Hungarians, Rumanians, Lithuanians, Slavs, and Mexicans, who aid not indulge in washing too recklessly before the issue of the edict; The Health Board found that rooms not exceeding twenty: feet long by fifteen wide by six hitili were occupied by twenty men sleeping, in them all night, arid ten men sleeping in them during the' day.' In one house tlie man and woman keeping tlie place, slept on the floor in one corner of tlie kitchen, in another corner were tho stove and tho table whereat the boarders sat for their meals, while tli» remain inn two corners contained beds that were lot to two families.
