DUNEDIN WINTER SHOW.

A GREAT SUCCESS. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, August I. r i he Otago A. and P. Society’s annual winter show was opened to-day under the most favourable circumstances. Toe weather loft nothing to he desired, and a large number of visitors came ia from tne youatry. The show was held later than usual, tho delay being due to a fire in tho Agricultural flail buildings in December, but. notwithstanding tins, tiio entries totalled 1131, as against 1008 in 1910. The now buildings arc larger and enable tiio exhibits to he displayed to better advantage, and also increase tiie comfort of patrons. An excellent display is made, tho ■quality comparing favourably with that cf former years. Tito Gcvcrr’oFc Advice to Farmers. Tiic show was officially opened by the Governor (Lord Islington), who said ho had peculiar satisfaction in attending such functions, being, as it were, a Jiving link between tnis distant and icyat Dominion and tiio other parts of the British Empire, because hq had been intimately associated with agricultural pursuits in the Old Courtly for many years past. Ho urged tho farmors* ot New Zealand to go on with the work of scientific research. They must extend, expand, and organise it every year. They will ho more and more confronted with competition in our staple products in countries which sold those products ni the same markets as New Zealand. In view of tiro fact that tho cheese had been stored for two months longer than usual, tho judges considered tho quality highly satisfactory, the exhibition being one of tho best ever seen at a local show. A splendid exhibit is made by tho Department of Agriculture, widen has excelled its previous efforts hero. The variety and number of tho stalls taxed tlis capacity of tho hall allotted to the .Department to its utmost limit. In addition to tho exhibits are a number cf charts showng tho export statistics, tho wealth of the Dominion, etc. Every prominent place is alcttecl to an illustration of what is being clone in tho way of co-cpoi ative field experiments. Tho Tourist Department also make a very good display.
