The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 1911. A CRITICISM.
The Scottish Commission’s report of its visit to Australasia is, from many points of view, a valuable compilation. Considering the short time its members had at their disposal they saw i great deal and gave some good advice. That they were exceptionally competent to do so’is .emphasised by the fact that several of the members of the Commission had been engaged >n similar work in Canada, Ireland and Denmark. In the course of their report Australia is declared to be on the whole a good dairyman’s country, and its advantages and disadvantages are summarised as under:— Advantages: (1) Cheap land, (2) cheap cows, (3) inexpensive buildings, (1) a climate permitting cows to lie in the open all the year round, (5) a convenient market and a fair price at the factories, and (G) 'helpful Government supervision. The disadvantages are: 1 (1) Dear and scarce labour, (2) an inferior stock of milk cows, (3) occasional dry seasons, and (4) the farmers’ inexperience and ignorance of scientific farming. Ail these points apply more or less to dairying in New Zealand. One rather serious charge ‘s added against the Australian native to possibly leaven the many good things said about him and his country. It is unthriftiiicss: he is said to earn money easily and to spend it carelessly. We arc afraid this also .may bo alleged against the New Zealander.
