HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL REPORT. The following is a copy of the report to Ijo presented to tlio annual meeting of the Horticultural Society to bo held at the Borough Council Chamber at 7.30 o’clock to-morrow evening:— The season 1910-11 may be regarded as a successful one from all standpoints. The working account shows a profit of £3 19s KkU for the year after deducting £5 for depreciation on plant and trophies. The bank balance and cash in hand amount to £1 16s 3d, against which there are outstanding accounts of £2 11s 6d. The bulb show was a splendid exhibition and was well attended by the public. The society is indebted to Mr Osmond for the lino exhibit staged, which added considerably to the attendance at the show. The rose show was held on the same day as the Taranaki Agricultural Siiow and was not the success the exhibition merited. Owing to the rose show date falling in .proximity to now numerous agricultural shows, the committee hog to recommend that this show ho dropped and that the Horton Rose Bowl he included in the autumn schedule. The autumn show was, from a horticultural standpoint, a huge success, and t ho financial loss occasioned would possibly not have existed and certainly would have been reduced had not flic society unfortunately had on the first night to face a strong counter-attrac-tion in the shape of a circus and on the second night unfavourable weather conditions. The committee wish especially to thank the ladies who supplied an excellent luncheon on the first dav of the show and so success-

fully carried out the afternoon tea and supper arrangements. The membership this year was the largest on record, the total reaching nearly two hundred. By far the greater number of these were enrolled by ills F. Arden, to whom the thanks of the society arc due for this and many other favours. The thanks of tbo society are also duo to many friends for donations and special prizes; to Mr F. Westbury, who came a great distance to show and returned his cheque for prize-money; and to the press for its generous support in excellent rcpoits and leaders. Mr P. Skoglrmd kindly acted as auditor in place of Mr Hcmingway, resigned. The committee beg to congratulate the Stratford A. and P. Association on its inauguration and splendid show, and hope that these kindred societies will continue to hold shows which are a credit to the town and the district.
