"THE POPE A ND THE K ING."

SPEECH BY ACTING-PREMIER. (For Press Association.) "Wellington, July 29. There is some comment in the city and in political circles to-day in consequence of a speech delivered by the Acting-Prime M inister at a banquet to the Ii ish delegates, and the fact that (according to the “New Zealand Times”) the toast of “The Pope and the King”) was honoured. The remarks by Sir James Carroll that arc objected to are: “There are weak parts of the British Constitution ; the edifice has stood too long, and its pillars are decaying here and there. In our small way we must try in think out the method of renovation of that national edifice and the strengthening of its pillars. And whore were the pillars? The outer ramparts had been fortified, but not sufficient consideration had been paid to the inner building. Not only did this affect England, but it affected Ireland and the dependencies of the Prated Kingdom.”
