THE PASSING OF T. E. TAYLOR.
(To the Editor, “Stratford Post.”) Sir,—The call came to T. E. Taylor when he had perhaps nearly reached the top rung of the ladder of fame, and when full of vigour and work, and to-day New Zealand mourns the loss of one of her truest sons. To those who knew Air Taylor personally, the loss is a keen one. He was a true sympathetic friend, always ready to help those in distress of mind and body, and he was rightly esteemed and loved by those who know him host—the people of Christchurch—and his loss is a loss to the Dominion. New Zealand can ill afford to lose men of his stamp, and the pity of it is that there are so few to take his place. As a politician he was absolutely straight, and would never stoop to a mean action to win an election, but was always for straight, clean government, both in political and civil life; and the workers of New Zealand have lost one of their truest champions. As a worker for over twenty years for the abolition of the liquor traffic, he was always in the forefront of the light, and to-day there are hundreds of women, men and children in the nolicenso districts of New Zealand who bless the name of “Tom” Taylor; and Jus name will be emblazoned on the shield of fame with those of Father Matthew, John B. Gough and othei great men who sacrificed themselves for God and humanity in the fight for the abolition of the liquor trade. His last messages to the works and people
show the stuff lie was made of, and if the men and women of New Zealand think anything of the man, let them respect la’s last wishes, abolish the .liquor curse, lift Labour up to its proper sphere, and then truly we shall be ouc with the late Tom Bracken, and say to each other, truly this is “God’s own Country.” May he rest in paradise is the wish of many. —1 am, etc., C. 1).
