NORTH ISLAND v. AUCKLAND

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, July 30. The hist match of tuo combined North Island country unions’ representative team was played here yesterday in very wet weather, the ground being very muddy. The country team made a good showing, and in the final quarter were getting the best of Auckland. ’The game finally ended in a draw, each sine scoring 8 points. Auckland played with the wind in the first quarter, but the countrymen’s defence was sound, and no score resulted. In the second quarter the visitors opened up an attack from the ‘‘blind” side of the scrum, near the touchline. The ball went across the hold through the hands of .Montgomery, Morgan, Lcnnard, and Downing, until Harry finally received and scored. McKenzie converted. A few moments later the Auckland forwards carried play to the visitors’ line, where Power picked up and passed out to McGregor ,\vho sent the ball on to Stewart, and the latter scored a try which O’Leary converted. Half-time was called with the score five all. Auckland got in the lead in the third quarter. Harper picked up out of a loose rush, and passed to McGregor, who sent on to Kail, and the latter got across near touch-in-goal !>y sheer strength. The kick at goal failed. Percival, Uoutts, Schmadt, and L’uuingham scored trios, Phillips converting one, whilst Wilson scored for Rangitikei. in mo first spell Campion and Percival were injured, and nad to retire. For New Plymouth Hill and A. Grant scored tries, and Hill kicked a goal from a penalty. For Stratford Schofield kicked a goal from a penalty. New Plymouth team showed the better form and combination.
