DIRTY DAIRIES.
NEED FOK INSPECTION. The President of the Farmers’ Union Conference moved, on behalf of Wellington— That, in connection with the dairy industry, some system of herd and shed inspection is necessary, and that this conference rccomjnends that the Agricultural Department and representatives of dairy : farmers confer as to the most suitable method of inspection. , . There were, he said, many careless dairymen who let their sheas, and the surroundings get into a dirty condition. The only tiling lie could see for it was to get ‘‘those hateful inspectors of the Government” to go round and tell the people what they ought to do. Mr. F. Hockley (Hunterville) seconded the motion. He thought it altogether wrong that the dirty, careless man should be allowed to contaminate the milk sent away by the careful producer. Mr. Fvans (North Canterbury) objected to any such interference hy the department, ''though he welcomed the assistance it was now giving to the farmers. . The Dairy Commissioner, speaking of what the department was aoing in this matter, said the officers had 1 visited about 4000 farms during the past twelve months, and an immense amount of good was being done in various directions. The department, however, was not policing the farms, though it certainly meant business. The Hon. T. Mackenzie said that had he been a member of the conference he would have sought to add these words to the motion, “to come into force, after the next elections.” f Laughter.) Certainly the Government was not going to issue any more dairy regulations just before election time. The department was getting on splendidly with the farmers under the present system of work by instructors. „ After the explanations given the motion was withdrawn. —“N.Z. Times.”
