THE RECENT STORM.

(Per Press Association.) . Christchurch, July 28. The Midland line was rather severely affected by the recent storm. There are a number of slips and washouts between Otarama and Cass, causing anxiety. It was reported this mroning that .slips between Otarama and Broken River had been cleared away, and that tlie train which left Christchurch at 8.30 would go through to old Broken River. The terminus line between Broken River and the Cass is at present blocked, but large gangs of men are working on it under the direction of the district engineer (Mr C. Bliss). It is anticipated that the line will be cleared tomorrow, so that the train from Cass to Christchurch will get through all right.”

Communication lias boon maintained on the north line, though repairs have still to lie made in several weak places. The motor service to Hammer is suspended in the meantime. The condition of the' telegraph service to-day is much the same as yesterday. One quadruplex is working through from Christchurch"'to Greymouth and this through to Wellington. On the north line via Waiau the wires have been restored as far as the Comvoy and between Blenheim and Kaikoura. The difficulty is now between Kaikoura and Conway, and as linesmen are working: there now communication will probably be restored bv that route by to-morrow.

At 3.30 the Telegraph Department notified that ope wire via Waiau and Blenheim had been restored and direct communication with Wellington secured.
