CHARGE OF FORGERY.

A PECULIAR DEFENCE. (Received 26, 9.15 a.in.) London, July 25. Robert Hutchinson, son of a Manchester cottouspinner, charged wft.li forgery, is making a remarkable defence, alleging himself to be the innocent victim of an ex-convict named Mackenzie*, who was a member of a skilful baud of forgers. . Hutchinson was actively engaged in political work, and received’ cheques from well-known people in, aid of the tariff reform propaganda. McKenzie acted as Hutchinson’s treasurer, bn,t was since dead. Hutchinson alleges that McKenzie utilised small cheques to execute forgeries of well-known persons for larger sums.
