“FAIRLY SULTRY.”
o—— Flitting through Christchurch on,rap id wings (the Wellington “Post’ 5 says) the Hon. J. A. Millar nad jnot lime to murmur “fairly sultry” whew questioned about the prospects cf nex’ session. This anticipation, oi much smoke and some lire is held by all win have watched the political hurlyburly lately. Sir James Carroll has hinted that the Governor’s Speech on TJ nrsday to “gentlemen of the He use of Representatives” and ‘honourable gentlemen of the Legislative Council'' will bo brief, to which may be added “beyond regret,” without disrespect to Lord Jslaington, for the Governor's Speech is the Government’s speech. Thfe Governor is no more responsible for the platitudes of it than for the grammar. Sir James, promising brevity for the vice-regal address, hopes that the debate will be proportionately short. He expects that members will be satisfied with two. or three days for the anything anti everything which they are at liberty to discuss in the Address-in-Reply debate. The “Post” would like To share the Acting-Premier's kept, but rather' thinks that members v ill be inclined to stretch loose two or three days. Much has occurred during.the recess to set the Pro parties by tile ears. The “Black business ’ will ; tobably consume some Time, and tnliigs Imperial, with special reference to S.u Joseph Ward, will not be .taken as read. Allegations about judges; Mokau land, and other topics will fill many pages of Hansard. In addition to quantities of impetuous speech, provoked by party taunts, there will nc doubt be a large amount of deliberate and more-or-less cool-bloodod oratory, pointed at constitutents. If is the members’ last session before the polls, and rivals are in the field. Mr Millar’s phrase “fairly sultry” was rather mild. mAntommiovo!)
