MATCHING BIG BOXERS.
A SYDNEY SCHEME. The “Daily Chronicle’s” statement regarding Die matching of Johnson and Langford will occasion consi leral'le surprise on this side of the world, as well as at Horne. As the “Chronicle’s” information emanates from Sydney it is probable that the nowly-formed “ Self-defence and Sports, Ltd., Company,” a Sydney enterprise, designed to handle big iignts, has something to do with it. Tug company has secured an option over the Sydney Sports Ground for the purpose of conducting boxing contests next season, and it had opened np negotiations with both Johnson and Langford respecting a battle in Sydney. The ground would accommodate JO,OOO people, and with the pi ices ranging from £5 to /ss, the gate would reach the immense total of £21,2#). After JO per cent, had been deducted there would be (it was figured out) ,•£17,670 left, and the 60 and 10 per cent, division for the tighten; would mean £10,6(V) and £7070. Of the £7575 remaining, the trustees of the ground would receive 10 per cent, or £2125, and the promoters £5050. hi regard to the alleged supervision of'the battle (with a 10 per cent, remuneration) the State, Gov- < rumen t. it looks as though the “Chronicle” has mistaken “governing body” (i. 0., the trustees) for “the. Government,” The McGowen Government lias certainly .shown enterprise so far. but it can hardly be nicinicd handling a tight For the world’s championship . Johnson denies the report, as noted, lint the big fellow must get something to do soon, or pawn ids motors.
