RACING CONFERENCE.

(Per Tracis Association.) 'Wellington, July IS. At the Racing Conference to-day tho stipendiary stewards’ r-nnisr.ittee r.uinittcd a suggestion piovi ling tor the appointment of stipendiary stewards. Mr Nolan, moving to this effect, said they must make racing more palatable. The president said fcho carrying of tho motion would make appointments mandatory. Several country members expressed the opinion that they should ascertain what the proposal would cost, tl e country clubs.

The Hon. O. Samuel moved an amendment that a stipendiary stewards’ committee be elected with power to apuoint stipendiary stewards provided no part of the expense incurred would fall on tho club whose meeting was unattended by the stipendiary steward. Sir George Clifford, Bart., expressed tho opinion that appointments should ho made, as besides keeping the sport clean, it would give the public confidence. The Hon. 0. Samuel withdrew from his amendment the provision concerning clubs where stewards did not attend, and Mr Nolan then intimated his willingness to give way to the amendment. The Hon. J. D. Ormond supported the proposal strongly. On being put to vote, the division was: Ayes 21, noes (P). As, however, a three-fourths majority was required to carry a motion of the kind, it was declared lost. A Wanganui remit urged the appointment of a committee to consider the advisableness of establishing a New Zealand Jockey Club. This was withdrawn on the conference appointing the following committee to consider tho constitution of the conference and the government of racing generally, and tho feasibility of improving the same: —Hons. J. Ormond, E. Mitchelson, 0. Samuel, and Messrs McVay, Bidwill, Nolan, Guinness and Freidlandor. Tho following were appointed a dates committee:—Messrs Freidlandor (chairman), Abbott, Goodbehcre, Miller, McVay, and Hood-Williams. The conference closed with the unanimous re-election of Sir George Clifford to the presidency.
