THE RACING COMMISSION. A WESTPORT PROTEST. Westport, July 16. The Hon. R. McKenzie arrived at Westport yesterday, and in the evening was interviewed by several deputations on local matters. To a deputation in protest against the Racing Commission’s report, he expressed sympathy and stated that lie would place their protest before the Minister for Internal Affairs. A member of the deputation stated that it was never intended by Parliament that the Commission should deprive a community of 13,000 people absolutely of its races, yet that was the effect of the Commission’s report. NORTH CANTERBURY’S POSTj TION. Christchurch, July 16. Deputations waited on the Hon. 1). Buddo on Saturday, protesting against the decision of the Racing Commission in respect to the Ohoka Racing Club, the North Canterbury Racing Club and tho Waihora Sports Club. Replying to a deputation re the Ohoka Club, tho Minister said that ho recognised that no complaint had been made in the district where tho club had been in existence for forty years, and there had been no difficulty in regard to the management. The record was a most satisfactory one. Whatever view one took of the recommendations, North Canterbury had more ground for complaint than any other part of the Dominion, as there were 24,000 people north of Christchurch who had only three single days’ racing for racing clubs and one for a steeplechase meeting, and all permits with tho exception of that of the Steeplechase Club had been withdrawn. The Commission’s linding would come into operation on August Ist, and tne matter could only be altered by an Act of Parliament. He thought that the club should continue if it thought it had the confidence of the public and should apply for a race meeting license in the usual way. Referring to the North Canterbury Club’s deputation, the Minister said that while ho did not agree with the Commission’s finding, he had to carry out the intention of the Act, and any alteration would have to l)e made by an Act of Parliament. However, tho future was “in the lap of the gods,” and there was no telling what- would take place. As to the Waihora Sports Club, he said that not one Stipendiary Magistrate had recommended a permit for sports clubs. Legislation only provided for racing clubs, and the only thing the committee could do was to form themselves into a racing club and apply for a permit in the usual way. This tie knew would be against the desires of the committee, but it was the only way out of tho difficulty.
