The door has now apparently been finally closed to compromise. r iim unionist peers prefer to test the Government’s powers to force their scheme upon thq, Lords. * The report stage is completed. Lord Lansdownc’s and Lord Cromer s amendments have been retained. Lord Morley asserted that the Lords if«d tin ended '* l B'll -o fr *T. ti at they had made it just the Bill they liked. Lord Lansdowne said if all amendments were inserted, still it would be a very dangerous measure. The third reading has been set down for the 20th, and the Commons will consider the amendments on the 24th, when it is expected Mr Asquith will intimate what the Government will do if the peers resist. SMALL HOLDINGS IN SCOTLAND. London, July 14. The Government has allocated £200,000 for the purpose of the Small Holders in Scotland Bill, which lias hiherto been a private members’ Bill, but has now been adopted by the Government.
