FOREST FIRES.
TOWNS WIPED OUT. MANY PEOPLE PERISH. New York, July 12. Terrific forest fires are raging in Northern Michigan. The twin towns of Aosablo and Oscada have been wiped out, and at least 75 people have perished, while 1800 are homeless. The damage so far is estimated at a million sterling. Ottawa, July 12. Thirty have perished in forest fires in Northern Ontario. The towns of Cochrane, couth of Porcupine, and Pottsville have been destroyed, and Tisdale half destroyed. Kelso has boon deserted, the inhabitants seeking refuge in streams. It is believed the casualties will be several hundreds. Now York, July 12. The heat continues. The victims of the fire are believed to include'2oo employees of the Dome mine, who w»; c penned in the shafts. Corpses strew the streets in South TVucupine. Many prospectors’ bodies have been found. Fifteen were driven into a lake in their effort to escape the names, and all perished. Six hundred inhabitants of Cochrane escaped in a relief train before the tpwn was destroyed. Part of the town of Lisdale was destroyed,and 4000 residents in the neighbourhood escaped in a relief train. The flames were checked I y dynamiting some houses. The town of Kelson was abandoned to the flames. A relief fund lias been opened at Toronto.
