The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORTED THE EGMONT SETTLER. THURSDAY, JULY 13, 1911. THE SCOTTISH CENSUS.
A Parliamentary report on the census of Scotland In the Registrar-Gen-eral and Superintendent of ,Statistics was issued on June Ist of this year. The figures given, it is pointed out,
may require some amendment, but summaries on which the report is based arc* believed to be substantially correct. The population on census day amounted to -1,709,1 15 (2,807,003 males and 2,401,812 females). The total showed an increase of 287,3-!2 on that in 1901, which is smaller than that found by any census since 1861. A scrutiny of the changes of the population during the last decade shows an increase in 18 counties and a decrease in 15, the greatest increases being found in Lanarkshire, Fife, Dumbarton, and Renfrew, and the greatest decreases in Inverness, Orkney, Argyll, and Forfar. The decennial rate of increase for the country amounts to 6.1 per cent, whereas in (ho previous decade the rate of increase was 11.1 per cent. The excess of births over deaths during the intorconsal period amounted to 5-12,750, or 255,417 more than the ascertained increase, the difference being the measure of excess of emigration from Scotland over immigration into Scotland. Of the total popnlaton .‘1,109,821 live in the burghs, and 1,619,(521 in extra burghal portions of the country. As to the burghs, Glasgow, Fdinbnrgii, Dundee, .and Aberdeen have now populations of over 150,000, five have populations between 50,000 and 100,000 and nine have populations between .‘50,000 and -10,000.
