It will bo remembered that at the recent criminal sessions of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth, Lewis John Pepperill was indicted and tried for carnally knowing a girl under the a£o of sixteen years at Toko in May, y June, and July, 1910. The jury, after a retirement of over four hours, were unable to agree, and were discharged. A fresh trial was applied for by the Crown Prosecutor at the same sittings, but on the application; of Mr -Sperufe, counsel for the accused, the new trial, was fixed for the 'next sessions in September next.
