A MUSICAL RESOLUTIONARY.
Socialists in Beilin have been made very happy by the supposed discovery that .the . groat Schumann was a revolutionary. The discovery has been made . through a French ransicograpasi., M. Charles Malherbe, who is keeper of tire library of the Baris Opera. ) At a public sale some time ago M. Malherbe bought a bundle of manuscripts, and among thorn he was delighted to find the score in Schumann’s handwriting of sonic songs for four male voices. The words arc distinctly revolutionary, having been suggested probably by the outbreaks which occurred in many parts of Europe during 1818. As tar as can bo ascertained the score .was entirely unknown and had not been published. M. Malherbe kept the secret oi his discovery for a long time, but eventually a, friend of his wrote a book concerning Schumann, and M. Malherbe showed him the score, which was mentioned in the book. Immediately' afterwards the librarian was approached by various German choral societies, but he refused to show the manuscript .to anyone. The conyright of Schumann’s works having lapsed, M. Malherbe contends that the ownership of the unpublished manuscript rests solely with the possessor of it and ' Schumann’s heirs can have no ■claim-, on. it. The possessor of the manuscript must be the judge of the advisability of miblishing it. and ns the composer himself withheld it, M. Malherbe believes that he would not bn justified in giving it to the world. He has been pressed by lovers of Schumann to have the part-songs published, but apparently he is determined' to retain them for himself alone, and the musical woHd will have to" wait Patiently until M. Malherbe alters his views or dies. In the meantime, ou the strength of n manuscrint which they have not seen, the Socialist leaders in Beilin are claiming Hebert, Schumann as a brother revolutionist.
