The gardener reported :—Everything is going on well. The work in the vegetable garden Js well ahead. The lawns look well, but since the frost the grass is very short, and I fear there is net enough feed for the sheep. During the past week they’ have, been niboiing the shrubs, .etc., rather badly. 1 have got -a i start on' tiie hedges, which, weather permitting 1 will have finished by the end of this week. As yet the ground is too! cold and wet for seed sowing. T have put a few’ in scattered places, but I do not think they will come to much. 1 However, I have got my seed-beds and ground ready when the weather norm Its.-—Messrs. Ward and Marfell eulogised the gardener on the lilio appearance of the ground. The Visiting Committee reported: —We visited the Hospital and grounds and found everything in good order. The gardener is to be complimented on the excellent way in which the vegetable garden has been seen to cince our last visit. In regard to assistance for the gardener we recommend that a man be employed to attend to all lawns and grass in the grounds, the gardener to see to all flower plots, paths, etc. If this recommendation is carried out, your committee feel sure that there will be no overlapping,, and that greater efficiency in the upkeep of the grounds would be assured. Wo recommend that the furniture mentioned in the Matron’s report be renovated. Instructions have been given to the gardener to procure the necessary garden seeds he requires. Tiie Health Inspector reported, under date June 30th:—During the month four oases of typhoid fever, and one Of tuberculosis were notified in the Borough. The typhoid cases were amongst children attending the school in tne Foresters’ Hall. Water from tiie tank at the- school, .whs, on good grounds, suspected as the source of infection. 1 The back of the premises was in a very dirty state. ! The same was taken away and burnt. Acting under instructions of the Board, J inspected the Annin road in tile Stratford Comity from Ngairo to the boundary beyond Waipuku re cowsheds and piggeries canning a nuisance through being in too close proximity to the public road. J found a cow-shed and a piggery at Waipuku abutting on the main road. Both Were fairly clean. .1 have warned .them that unless a high standard of cleanliness is maintained laws are sure to he passed compelling farmers to- have cowheds, piggeries, and manure heaps a specified distance from public highways. I will visit other roads in the county as opportunity permits. In consequence of complaint, an old lady’s premises, Skinner Hoad, Ngaire, were visited. Complaint was made that she was living in an insanitary condition. I found the old lady to bo 86 years of ago, living in dirty condition, and getting as much attention as she will lot the neighbours give her. She is causing no nuisance to anyone else, and ic strongly opposed to going to any borne. She is able to support herself. The old lady has no relatives in Now Zealand, One insanitary stable, in the Borough has been reported on. Tiie butchers’ shops, marts, and grain stores in the Borough were inspected re rat extermination. Very fit-tie evidence of rats was found. Three fruit shops were inspected, and wore found to be in good-order.
