OBITUARY. By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. United Press Association. (Received 3, 9.20 a.in.) Sydney, July 3. The death has occurred of Sir Charles Gordon, Baronet, of heart failure. COMMONWEALTH AND STATES. Sydney, July 3. The Federal Treasurer has paid the State £128,401 in settlement of the per capita return for the year, this being £21,78-1 less than was expected. Mr Carmichael stated that, the return was based on the recent census instead of the Federal statistician’s estimate on December 31st. (Received 3, 10.35 a.m.) Sydney', July 3. The Federal Government offers the States 3 per cent, interest on properties transferred to the Commonwealth at tin' inauguration of Federation. All the States decline tiio amount. The now system of compulsory training operated throughout Australia on Saturday. The attendances at drills were considered satisfactory. REVENUE RETURNS. Hobart, July 3. The revenue returns are £972,126, a decrease of £38,085.
