The latest fish story comes in the shape of a letter from a puzzled correspondent to one of the Auckland daily newspapers. It is: “While put for a run in my launch yesterday, just off Arakei, we were surprised to sec three long things standing straight up out of the water about .‘IOO yards ahead of us, and going in the same direction as ourselves. After a while they went slowly under, but ;camo; up again in a fuinute or so. This continued until we got within 30 yards of the thing, when it disappeared altogether. The objects that were sticking out of the water were just like elephants’ trunks, and, fully 4 feet long. Wo never' saw any sign of a body, so could not make out what it was for some minutes. After we had passed the place we wore surprised to see a large fish—considerably larger than our boat (22ft.)— mailing towards the, North Head, and swimming on top of tho water nearly all the while. After guessing all sorts of things, we came to the conclusion the first object must have been a huge octopus swimming on tho surface with three of its feelers in the air. As 1 have never heard, of an octopus swimming on the' surface, before, X was wondering whether any of your readers had ever seen anything like it. After seeing the large fish, which looked like a whale, we thought that perhaps it had disturbed the octopus, and made it come to the top.” For influenza take Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure; never fails.
