A GISBORNE COMPLAINT.

(Per Press Association.) Gisborne, June 30. At. a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day the subject of the understaffing of the local police force was discussed at length, and came in for some severe criticism. The chairman pointed out that there were only a detective-sergeant, a mounted constable, and five foot constables to control a large scattered'district and a population of 13,400, while in two largo main suburbs the police were seldom, if ever, seen. The chairman stated that he brought the matter up on his own initiative, and had not been approached uy the police, hid he considered it quite impossible foi Sergeant Hutton to administer the district with such an inadequate force. A stricture was also passed in regard to the lack of accommodation for constables at the barracks, thereby cans ing great inconvenience. The meeting decided to make urgent representation to Sir Jas. Car roll and the Minister of Justice or the matter.
