FIRES.
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, June 30. By a fire at 5 a.in. to-day a tenroomed dwelling at Papanui, owned and occupied by Mrs. Eliza Smith, was totally destroyed, the inmates escaping, in their night attire. The house was insured for £2OO in the Commercial Union and the furniture for £125 in the New Zealand Office. Dunedin, June 30. An extensive factory owned by R. Hudson and Co., biscuit and confectionary manufacturers, in Castle Street, had a narrow escape from destruction by fire this evening. The premises are now being installed with a Grinnell sprinkler, but the installation was not quite complete. Fortunately, however, the manufacturing section, which comprises a large building in the centre of the company’s works, and in which the fire originated, was equipped with the apparatus, which checked the flames, which had a strong hold. The fire apparently started on the ground floor in or near the lift, and quickly readied the top floor, but the brigade got it under in good time. The origin is a mystery, there having been no fire in the vicinity of the supposed starting place. The damage is estimated at from £IOOO to £I2OO, The section affected was insured for about £6OOO, the main policy being with the Royal Exchange Company.
