POHOKURA NOTES.

(FVom Our Own ’Correspondent.) A very interesting gathering took place at our school hero on Thursday afternoon last, when Mr David Hickford, chairman of the School Committee, presented the Coronation medals to tho school children. Although the day was not all that could be desired in the way of sunshine, the children and grown-ups turned out in good numhors. Alter the medals had been handed out Mr Ritchie, schoolmaster, placed on the table a really splendid singing programme., Mrs Prideaux and Miss M. Speck supplied the music. Tho ’ sinking went off splendidly and spoke well in : regard to the singing abilities of our school children. It was a real treat to listen to the sweet voices with such good time andi tune. lam very pleased to make special mention of a duet sung by .Master Antony Ey- • berg and Miss Rose Hyherg, which was the treat of the day, ylso a .quartette sung by Masters Alfred Speck, Fenton Clark, George Clark, and Antony Hyherg. which was listened to with, satisfaction. .. Although Mr Ritchie (schoolmaster) has only been a short time in charge of our school, tho progress that the school children are making speaks for itself of Mr Ritchie’s qualification as a* sciiool teacher, and groat credit is also duo to him for tho singing lessons ho has given tho children, which is bringing out a lot of talent that has not been heard before. At tho close of tho concert tho refreshments so plenteous and tasty provided by the ladies were handed round, and the inner-man was well satisfied. Many thanks arc due to the ladies for supplying such a nice refreshing, cup, of tea and, so many nice eatables,. Miss-.Mb Speck contributed two songs which .were; much appreciated .by. those - present. After the singing-of “God save the King” and throe hearty - cheers to Mr Ritchie and Mr 1). Hickford thd gathering broke up. Thus.ended a really splendid school entertainment. We trust that our .schoolmaster will he allowed by the Board to remain withus for a lengthy term, .i. . » We are very pleased to see the fruits of our labour.: Some time ago a number of settlers hero waited on the Minister of Public Works asking for a passenger train lo run twice weekly, from To Wera to hero. We now have a train: service twice weekly —Tuesdays and Saturdays—which is a great convenience to us. Feed is rather scarce winter on account of the dry weather we had late in the autumn. However, so far the stock is looking well. Mr 15. Brocklohank has let two contracts of hushfelling here, one of 100 acres and one of 200 acres. The men are making very satisfactory progress, taking tho weather at this time of tlie year into consideration. Messrs Welsh and George have completed their contract for bridle-track formation on the Arnold Road. Mr G. T. Murray informed me hist Saturday that he had a little more money to spare for the Arnold, Road, and that ho would lie laying .off some more work ,on that road. , , i Mustering , and crutching sheep is the .order of the day, .when tho weather will permit, v i'. •
