THE FOXTON COLLISION.

MARINE ENQUIRY. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, Juno 26. An enquiry commenced to-day into tho collision between the steamers Wairau and Himitangi in the Manawatu River on May 16. Dr. McArthur presided, with Captains Post and Black as assessors.

According to tho evidence of Captain Manley, of the Himitangi, tlio accident was caused by the Wairau breaking both tho understanding and tho rule by crossing over to the wrong side. Oliver Mclntyre, mate of the Wairau, said his vessel was on her starhoard side of the river, and tho Himitangi had kept her starboard side the vessels must have passed in safety. He know of, no understanding bywhich inward-hound boats had to wait at a bend for boats going the other wav.

The court of enquiry concluded tonight investigating the circumstances of the recent collision of tiie steamers Wairau and Himitangi in tho Manawatu River, Foxton. Their decision will he given to-morrow.
