THE AYRSHIRE.
FOR THE DAIRY FARMER
MR J. KYLE’S ADDRESS
Mr J. Kyle delivered an address to the Dairy Conference at Palmerston North last Thursday on “The suitability of the Ayrshire for dairy purposes.” There was a large audience and Mr Kyle was introduced as a successful Ayrshire breeder of long standing. He made an illustration of a couple of Ayrshires from his own herd. Mr Kyle said that the Ayrshire had so advanced in its original homo, Scotland, that nineteen-twen-tieths of the Scotch.dairy herds were purebred Ayrshires and had spread over the world. After dealing fully with the judging points of the Ayrshire, Mr Kyle claimed that the breed was extremely hardy, notable for butter fat production and cheese making and free from the tendency to deteriorate common to other breeds. There was a gradual increase in milk production up to eleven years of age. Present tests showed the cows twenty years old horded the list with an average butter-fat yield of 321 pounds. The average yield for all ages was 2621 pounds. The estimated average yield of cows in New Zealapd was only 198 pounds, so that the benefits to ho secured by a wider user of the Ayrshire here were self evident. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Kyle for his instructive paper.
