A DISPUTED PICTURE.
THE DUCHESS OF DEVONSHIRE
(Received 26, 10 a.m.)
London, June 25. Dir. Pierpont Morgan now Holds Gainsborough’s picture of the Duchess of Devonshire which was once stolen in London, and was later found in Chicago. The authenticity of the picture is challenged by another Duchess of Devonshire in Spink’s gallery, London. The latter’s credibility depends upon a written statement by Mr. John Foster, a former general merchant of Sydney, dated July 16th, 1878, the then owner of the picture. If the Foster picture is genuine, then Mr. Morgan’s is a replica by Gainsborough, and finished by Sir Thomas Lawrence. The supposed birth and parentage of Mr. Foster’s father are said to account for the Duchess entrusting the picture to him.
