HOSPITAL SATURDAY.
The weather was fine on Saturday for the street collection taken up in aid of the funds for the proposed infectious diseases ward at the hospital. Five Girl Peace Scouts carried boxes, and were assisted by about a dozen Boy Scouts, who, in addition to helping with the work in Broadway, devoted special attention to the outlying parts or the town. The collection was very successful, and it is expected that, with the proceeds of the recent ball, a sum of £6O will be available to earn the Government subsidy of 24s to the £. Of the girls, Miss Sangster handed over the largest individual amount—£4 0s 3d—Miss Bernard being second with £2 18s 3-Jd. The Scoutmaster offered a prize of half a guinea to the Boy Scout who handed over the largest amount, and this prize has been won by W. Kivell, who collected £1 15s Hid. The second largest amount—£l Is lid—was handed in by Scout Johnson. To the amount already stated as being available will have to be added the sum received for the sale of tickets for a matinee given on Saturday afternoon towards the funds by Madame Bernard, of His Majesty’s Theatre. Unfortunately, after a few pictures had been shown the management deemed it advisable to abandon the performance, owing to trouble with the picituro machine, and those present were given passes for any future performance at the Theatre.
It is expected that plans for the proposed infectious diseases ward will bo submitted to the next meeting of the Hospital Board.
