STEAMER OFFICER CONVICTED OF ASSAULT. (Per Press Association.) Timaru, Juno 25. At the Police Court to-day H. Porter, a powerful young man, fourth officer of the Drayton Grange, was charged with assaulting Lewis, the third officer, with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The steamer was in, port on Tuesday, and accused alleged that Lewis insulted him ashore. Accused came aboard drunk, found Lewis asleep in the second officer’s cabin, pommelled him in the face as he lay, and, when Lewis woke up and clinched accused, tried to gouge an eye out, injuring the tissues seriously. Evidence was given that accused was extremely violent and dangerous when drunk. Knives and other weapons had to be taken from him, and put out of his way. Lewis occupied the same cabin as Porter, but on Tuesday was taken into another for fear of mischief, when Forter returned. The two Justices decided to deal with the case summarily, and fined accused £lO (half to go to Lewis as compensation), all costs and £2 2s solicitors’ fees. The money was not forthcoming, and the captain declined to pay preferring to pay Porter off and discharge him. Accused, who is cpiite a young man, and said to have nad a good career at sea, started as an A.B. four and a half years ago. Ho now holds a second mate’s certificate.

REDUCTION OF RACING. RANGITIKEI PROTESTS. (Per Press Association ) Marton, Juno 25. Residents of Lower Rangitikci, and the racing public in particular, are much dissatisfied at the decision of the Racing Commission to deprive Bulls of race meetings. The club is one of the oldest in the North Island, has first-class appointments, and has the best steeplechase course on the coast. A deputation from the club, to be introduced by Mr. Newman, M.P., will wait on the Minister on Tuesday. It is hoped the Government will not endorse the recommendations of the Commission. THE TAKAPUNA. EN ROUTE TO WELLINGTON. (For Press Association.) 1 Westport, Juno 25. The s.s. Takapuna, with temporary steering gear, in tow of the s.s. Komata, left Westport for Wellington at 8.20 this morning.
